Rooftop Solar & Beyond: 4 Places to Install Solar Panels

March 9, 2021

Business and residential solar power are making waves in the Kingdom. Vision 2030 has ushered in a sea change towards renewable energy, and with Saudi Arabia’s abundant sunshine, solar power is driving that change. The Kingdom is making significant investments in solar, and Saudi businesses are beginning to adopt it as well. Before long, both business and residential solar will be ubiquitous in the Kingdom. In previous blog posts, we’ve discussed how solar power works, and its benefits for businesses. But what about panels? Most solar power systems utilize rooftop solar panels — but the roof isn’t your only option for solar panels. Here are 4 places you can install solar panels:

1. Flat or Incline Roofs

The most logical place to install solar panels are on the roof, whether it’s business or residential solar. But not all roofs are created equal. A flat roof is perfect for solar, since every panel will get full sunshine, assuming there isn’t a taller building right next door that would shade the roof during most of the day. Rooftop solar can be used on incline roofs as well. With an incline roof, shade can become more of an issue than with a flat roof. When installing rooftop solar on an incline, follow one simple rule: the side of the roof that gets the most daily sunshine should have the most panels.

2. Rooftop Canopy

With a rooftop solar canopy, you can get the most out of your space. A canopy will turn your roof into a shaded area that can be utilized as an outdoor cafeteria, an observation deck and various other outdoor applications. Putting solar panels on top of the canopy will serve the same purpose as a flat top roof, but with the benefit of more useable space.

3. Car Shade Canopies

The sun in the Kingdom is strong — and hot. Car interiors and windows can deteriorate quickly under sun exposure. That’s why car canopies are a popular addition to any business or multi-unit residential space. They’re also the perfect place to install solar panels. You can even light the canopies at night using the power you generated during the day.

4. On the Ground

As long as your solar panels have great exposure to the sun, they can be installed anywhere — including the ground. Some businesses or homes may not have great roof space but may have extra ground space. Building a solar panel mini-farm on the ground will generate the same amount of power as putting them on a roof — if, of course, the ground isn’t shaded by other buildings or trees.

Depending on your space or building, you can get creative with where to install your solar panels. All you need a little creativity — and copious sunshine.
